CAGD 112 - Digital Photography

EPortfolio MidTerm

Panorama Assignment

For this assignment, we were supposed to stitch together 5-6 images together, creating one composition as a panorama. In Photoshop, we are supposed to first automate the images and use a brush to make each image blend together, then use the stamp tool to fill in the borders.

For my photo, I wanted to capture my favorite area in the school to relax. I started with Kendall Hall at the edge of the bushes and made my way through the lawn, to the Performing Arts Center. I also decided to wait until 6:00 p.m. to take these pictures so I could capture the sun in the panorama.

The only problem I encountered with this composition that I had to fix in photoshop is the lighting of the photo that included the sun. It made the whole image darker overall, so I had to fix the brightness to blend with the rest of the panorama.

HDRI Assignment

For the HDRI assignment, we were supposed to take three different photos with all different exposure levels. One of them had to be an over exposure, an under exposure, and the last was a normal exposure. It also introduced different bit depth levels and merging photos in lightroom to create HDRI compositions.

After taking the three different exposure photos and merging them in lightroom, I brought the photo into photoshop where I adjusted the Red, Green, and Blue levels to bring a little bit more color to my final composition.

The only thing that I would have done differently is to have taken a lower exposure level shot so that the shadow in my final composition could have been lighter. When taking these photos, I was in a bit of a rush, so when I was looking the images over after, I wasn’t thinking that my image wasn’t dark enough.

Things Assignment

For the Things Assignment, we were supposed to take a photo of an object but focus on our shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. We were to focus our camera on an object with a blurred background. The shutter controls how fast we want the shutter to go in case of lighting due to the time of day or of things in motion. ISO helps with light making a false light to help with our exposure. The aperture controlled the amount of light we wanted to enter the lens, making the focused object have a more or less blurred background.

I decided to take this picture because, during my free time, I go around and find random plants or items that look interesting to capture. One of my friends was relaxing on the grass and I decided to join him. I was still looking around for picture opportunities and glanced at his ragged shoe. It reminded me of a baseball photo I saw in the past, so I took the photo and fixed it up in photoshop to really pop the colors in my composition.

The only problem I encountered was that I couldn’t figure out what to edit for this composition, being that I found very few errors in my initial picture. So I decided to add brightness and contrast to make the shoe and the grass around it more colorful.

On The Edge Assignment

For the On the Edge assignment, we learned the basics of composition and the rule of thirds. Our goal was to draw the viewer’s attention to the main subject. With my composition, I decided to take a picture of a flower from the Mary Lemcha Camelia Garden. I decided to take the picture an hour before sunset to capture the light hitting inside the flower.

When looking back at the shadow on the left side of the rose, the darkness made the rose less appealing to the eye. That was the reason I decided to make the photo black and white and increase the contrast and change the RGB in photoshop to make the rose pop more to capture the viewer’s attention. I also decided to crop the image so that the composition would guide the attention to a corner of the picture. I lastly applied some dodging and burning to better my final composition.
